Read the following paragraph and underline the topic sentence on the answer sheet. No one knows exactly who invented knitting. It happened in different areas of the world at different times. The exact origins of knitting are a bit hard to place. Most recorded works say its origins come from the Middle East, which then spread to countries far away via trade routes. Other nations favored the elaborate Arabic-influenced knitting styles. Origins of knitting in Arabic areas can be traced back to fishermen, who would use the technique to create nets. Knitting originated in Egypt somewhere between 500 AD & 1200 AD. The oldest known knitted object and pieces come from Egypt, which are socks from the 1lth century. These socks are quite complex, using a special stitch and detailed color work. In the sametomb where the socks were found, other fragments were present.

Read the following paragraph and cross out TWO irrelevant sentences on the answer sheet. As psychologists who frequently travel for work, how we describe our careers to strangers in the airline seats next to us can determine the tone of the conversation for hours to come. For instance, the mere mention that we're psychologists prompts some people to open a book or pretend to fall asleep. Most passengers tend to sleep away their journey. In other cases, our expertise in mental matters seems to encourage our seatmates to unburden themselves. We can spend hours listening to the details of a failing marriage or a popular theory of motivation. A lack of motivation for achieving happiness in marriage concerns people greatly. Even pretending to be asleep doesn't seem to discourage our seatmates from asking us to interpret their dreams. On the few occasions we admit that we're not just general psychologists but that we actually study happiness for a living,we can be guaranteed a near-desperate response: "What can I do to be happier?”

Read the following paragraph and choose the best topic sentence from the four options that follow.Write the corresponding letter of your choice on the answer sheet.Zebras evolved from horses more than 2 million years ago, biologists have found. Scientists have previously assumed that zebras' stripes evolved for one, or a combination of four main reasons: confusing enemies, protecting against disease-carrying insects, controlling body temperature, and maintaining social unity. While numerous previous studies of the phenomenon focused on one single assumption, a study led by Brenda Larison, a researcher in UCLA, was the first to fully test a large set of assumptions against one another. The researchers examined zebras at 16 locations in Africa. On zebras in warmer climates, the stripes are bold and cover the entire body. On others-particularly those in regions with colder winters such as South Africa and Namibia-the stripes are fewer in number and are lighter and narrower. In some cases, the logs or other body parts have virtually no striping.
