① Americans have always had great faith in education. They believe that in a democracy all citizens must have some education in order to understand economic and political matters and to vote wisely. They also believe that education is essential to progress and prosperity(繁荣); that public education promotes equality; and that every person has the right to get as much education as he can absorb.

Besides courses for college preparation, there are many kinds of commercial and vocational training. Students are also allowed a choice of subjects. Methods of teaching vary widely, too. In addition there are specialized public schools for the handicapped, for the retarded（智力迟钝的）, and to those with other special needs, as well as accelerated and enriched courses for gifted students.
⑤ American schools are equipped with a large variety of learning aids including teaching machines, audio-visual equipment, television, computer, science laboratories, and various industrial arts shops.
