Things That Make College Success for Children
Many students with good grades are unprepared for the college experience. Therefore, parents who are interested in college success for their children must be aware of the following things.
①Give your children opportunities to visit other cities, farms, museums, historic sites, national parks, deserts, mountains, caves, lakes and rivers, a zoo, the theater, concerts, athletic events, your workplace, a manufacturing plant, impressive buildings, a college campus, lectures on a variety of topics, other countries or places with other races, religions, cultures, languages and folks, areas with poverty and anything else you can think of that will broaden their mind.
②Students who do not accept responsibility for their words, actions, behavior and performance are not ready for college. It is the parent’s role to teach their children to become responsible citizens who are willing to be accountable (有责任的) for their attitude, effort and results.
③College students are expected to function well on their own. They will need to gather information, analyze it and then make their own good decisions about a wide variety of behaviors and issues. Decision - making skills and independence are critical requirements for growing up. Therefore, parents should help allow their children more independence in decision - makings.
④School activities, part - time and summer jobs and community involvement will give students a more realistic view of the competitive world. Participation gives students the opportunity to learn about themselves and about others. It gives them a chance to develop and stretch their skills, knowledge and interests.
⑤A history of success will help students believe in themselves and gain self - confidence. Even the smallest success can be a positive influence on students who are trying to find their way. A list of past successes will remind them that they can succeed.
When you take a genuine interest in your children’s development, you will be rewarded with mature, self - confident children who are ready to achieve success in college.
